Greetings!! I wanted to post this since I know some of you were wanting to see the Freemont Troll. It’s a slightly blurry picture because a random stranger took it with my cell and it was windy, but you get the point. The troll rocks. I miss you guys! I hope you guys are doing well and enjoy your upcoming break! Seattle is wonderful. Truly. It is sooo beautiful up here. Lots of colors, trees, and mountains. I saw a wild bald eagle two weeks ago–flew right by me. It was the first time I’d seen one in the wild (as in, not in a zoo!). Feel free to tell everyone that I finally posted the troll picture. Here’s a bigger one:
Can you tell we’re moving? I’m standing in the middle of my living room and it is empty of furniture…at least the big stuff. Lots of cat stuff everywhere… Trying to figure out what flies with us and the cats and what gets packed. Crazy busy but excited. We fly up to Seattle on Saturday! Miss my kiddos @ McMath.
This was a tough decision to make, knowing that I leave behind some amazing students, but Amazon of Seattle has offered my husband an amazing job, one that would allow me to write novels full time, and we’ve decided to take the opportunity. We will be moving to Seattle in three weeks! I will miss all of you and will do my best to help McMath transition into the new teacher who takes my place. Feel free to keep in touch! You can always reach me via this webpage or shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
So if you remember, we talked about Copyright Laws and how downloading mp3s without paying for them *can* be illegal. I found a few articles on the topic where kids and parents were fined large sums of money in court for just this.
Woman Fined $1.9 Million for Illegal Downloads
Jury Orders Student to Pay $675,000 for Illegally Downloading Music
Food for thought for some of you pirates out there.
Lots of updates on the site! The assignments and deadlines calendars have been updated mostly through the end of the 2nd grading period. PIT students–please note that your Interview/Dress up date has changed due to a school holiday I forgot about! It’s just been nudged forward a day. Also, parents and students, please check the Deadlines Calendar and make sure you study for tests and quizzes! More updates coming soon.
Ready or not, school starts tomorrow! I look forward to seeing everyone bright and early in the morning! The website is *almost* ready…I just need to add a few other things in the coming weeks. Get a good night’s sleep tonight and see you tomorrow!
There was an article in the NY Times recently about whether or not algebra was needed. The author in this case, said that he felt algebra wasn’t needed anymore since students could just look up the answer on the Internet. One problem I have with this is that the author is assuming that every possible algebraic problem has been posted and solved to the Internet. The second issue being that algebra teaches more than just how to solve for x.
(Here’s the original article if you’d like to read it: Is Algebra Necessary?)
This is another article that demonstrates exactly why algebra is needed. I wanted to share it. It’s a good read.
Before Dropping Algebra, Fix Math Education!
I apologize that I was unable to attend Locker-Move-In/Meet-the-Teacher day for 6th graders. A ceiling fan in my house had some wiring issues and started a small fire. Everyone and everything is fine, except the ceiling fan, who is dead and will thus, have to be replaced. I’ll see all of you in class on Monday!
School starts with the kiddos in just over a week. This site is almost ready to go. Just finishing up some updates and pages. Ready or not, school is about to begin!
